After the war, he became a test pilot, breaking British distance records and notably pioneering the Hawker P.1127, Kestrel, and Harrier. He later managed sales and marketing for Hawker Siddeley Aviation. Bedford received several awards throughout his career, including the Order of the British Empire and was influential in military aviation until his retirement in 1986.
