He served as New Zealand's inaugural Poet Laureate from 1997 to 1998 and is known for founding the first creative writing course in New Zealand at Victoria University of Wellington in 1975. Manhire established the International Institute of Modern Letters in 2001 and has significantly contributed to the promotion of New Zealand literature. He has earned numerous accolades, including a Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement in 2007 and an Arts Foundation Icon Award in 2018.
