He earned a bronze medal at the 1975 Pan American Games and competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics. At the 1978 Commonwealth Games, he won multiple medals, including golds in relays. Sawchuk also swam for the University of Florida, where he received accolades such as SEC Male Swimmer of the Year and All-American honors, before qualifying for the 1980 Olympics, which he could not attend due to a boycott.
