Barua spent most of his life around Gauhati University in Jalukbari, which later honored him by naming a theater after him. He served as a member of the Indian Film Censor Board and was a founding member of the Indian Language Commission. He also founded the Assam Academy for Cultural Relations to promote unity among various languages and communities in Northeast India.
