Bismillah Khan (born Qamaruddin Khan, March 21, 1916 - August 21, 2006) was a prominent Indian musician renowned for playing the shenai, a wind instrument made of reed. Commonly referred to as 'Ustaad', he is credited with popularizing the shenai and elevating its status in traditional Indian music. While the shenai had been valued for ages, Khan transformed its image into a celebrated musical instrument. He was the third Indian classical musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 2001, and one of the few recipients of all four highest civilian honors in India.
