Björn Ingelman was a Swedish chemist and pharmaceutical researcher, born on November 6, 1917, in Uppsala and died there on December 12, 2000. He discovered the polysaccharide dextran while working with Nobel laureate Arne Tiselius. Dextran was later used in blood substitutes, leading to the introduction of Macrodex by Pharmacia. Ingelman held key positions at Pharmacia, including research director, and contributed to the development of gel filtration preparation Sephadex. He received several accolades for his work, including a gold medal from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.
