She was a prominent leader of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, organizing its women's branch, known as "The Daughters of Liberty." Canales fought against the American colonial regime in Puerto Rico throughout her life. In the 1940s and 1950s, she actively participated in various uprisings, including the Grito de Jayuya, where nationalists controlled the city for three days, leading to her imprisonment for 17 years after being accused of killing a police officer.
