Bobby L. Rush is an American politician, activist, and minister, serving as the United States Representative for Illinois's 1st congressional district since 1993, after being elected in 1992. A civil rights activist in the 1960s, he founded the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party. His district, primarily in South Chicago, was predominantly African American. Rush made history by being the only politician to defeat Barack Obama in an election during the 2000 Democratic primary. He was re-elected multiple times, and in 2016, he continued to serve as a Democratic representative.
