Bonnie Mathieson was an American scientist and pioneer in HIV vaccine research, who dedicated 43 years to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She played a crucial role in both NIH's HIV/AIDS research and vaccine programs, as well as in scientific policy. Born on May 10, 1945, she was the eldest of seven siblings and was raised on a farm in Illinois. She earned her B.Sc. in botany from the University of Illinois in 1967 and furthered her studies in microbiology at Stanford University, ultimately receiving her Ph.D. in biology from Weill Cornell Medical College.
