Bono, born Paul David Hewson on May 10, 1960, is an Irish singer-songwriter and activist, best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the rock band U2. He was raised in Dublin, where he met his future wife, Alison, and started the band with schoolmates. His lyrics often address social and political issues inspired by his Christian beliefs. Bono has won 22 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Aside from music, he is an outspoken advocate against extreme poverty and AIDS in Africa.
