Boris Lvovich Fonkich (February 25, 1938 – September 2, 2021) was a Soviet and Russian historian specializing in Byzantine paleography and Greek-Russian relations. He obtained a Doctorate in Historical Sciences in 1992 and served as a professor at the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology at Moscow State University. Fonkich was also a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens since 1994. He authored over 300 scientific articles in various languages including Russian, German, French, Italian, and Greek, published in important domestic and foreign journals.
