Boris Iwanowicz Polakow, born on May 10, 1938, in Rostov-on-Don, USSR, is a physician and former candidate astronaut in the Soviet space program. He graduated from high school in Rostov in 1955 and then from the State Institute of Medicine in 1961. Polakow specialized in space physiology and took part in astronaut selection in 1964 but was ultimately disqualified. He worked at various medical research institutes, receiving a doctorate in medical sciences in 1981, publishing 60 scientific papers, and holding several significant positions in medical research.
