Boris Vasilievich Spassky, born on January 30, 1937, is a Russian chess player and grandmaster renowned for being the World Chess Champion from 1969 to 1972. He competed in three World Championship matches, suffering a defeat against Tigran Petrosian in 1966, winning against Petrosian in 1969, and ultimately losing to Bobby Fischer in the famous 1972 World Chess Championship. In 1976, Spassky moved to France and became a French citizen in 1978, returning to Russia in 2012. He is recognized as the oldest living former World Champion.
