He began his academic journey in mathematics and physics, eventually earning a PhD in 1954. Ekelund taught at various educational institutions including the Björneborgs svenska samskola and Åbo Akademi, where he became a docent in physics and later in physical didactics. He was also involved in student governance at Åbo Akademi, serving as secretary and president of the Natural Sciences Club.
