During World War II, he was imprisoned for 13 months in Kamp Vught, where he was designated as Häftling 4236. He wrote about his experiences in a book, mentioning that he was transported to Vught on May 20, 1943, and feared execution due to possession of firearms. However, on April 20, 1944, coinciding with Hitler's birthday, he was granted clemency. The foreword of his book is dated April 1945.
