Brandon Shaffer, born on March 22, 1971, is a former President of the Colorado State Senate, having represented Senate District 17 which includes Longmont, Lafayette, Erie, and Louisville. A lifelong Democrat, he was first elected as a State Senator in November 2004 and was reelected in 2008. After the resignation of Senate President Peter Groff in 2009, Shaffer ascended to the presidency of the Senate. In 2012, he was the Democratic nominee for Colorado's 4th Congressional District but lost to incumbent Republican Cory Gardner in the general election.
