Brett H. McGurk, born on April 20, 1973, is an American lawyer and diplomat. He was appointed as the Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS by President Barack Obama on October 23, 2015, succeeding General John Allen. Previously, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iraq and Iran and led secret negotiations with Iran that resulted in the release of four American prisoners. He has also held various significant roles in the U.S. government, including serving as an advisor to President George W. Bush.
