As a lecturer, he taught Composition and Contemporary Music at Royal Holloway College. Dennis authored two influential books on music notation used in schools, advocating a new graphical representation of sound. He composed around 150 songs, several based on Chinese poetry, and created a trilogy of one-act operas inspired by Japanese Noh plays.
