Bruce A. Beutler is an American immunologist born on December 29, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois. He was awarded half of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, alongside Jules Hoffmann, for their discoveries regarding the activation of innate immunity. Beutler currently serves as the director of the Genetics Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and he is also a professor and chair of the Department of Genetics at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. His father, Ernest Beutler, was a professor of hematology and medical genetics.
