Bruce McEwen (January 17, 1938 – January 2, 2020) was an American neurophysiologist and neuroendocrinologist at Rockefeller University, renowned for his research on the effects of stress and sex hormones on the brain, particularly on the hippocampus and amygdala. He co-developed the concept of allostatic load, which describes the cumulative burden of chronic stress on individuals. McEwen earned a Bachelor's degree in chemistry from Oberlin College in 1959 and a Ph.D. in cell biology from Rockefeller University in 1964. He became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1994 and the National Academy of Sciences in 1997.
