He moved to Lansing in the late 1950s to attend Michigan State University, where he played with Benny Poole and worked as a radio DJ. Spangler became actively involved in Detroit's jazz scene in the 1970s, producing and performing with various artists. He lived in Northern California during the 1990s, hosting a radio program and producing jazz music until his passing on January 16, 2014, due to lung cancer.
