Bushra al-Assad, born on October 24, 1960, is a Syrian physician specialized in pharmacy from the University of Damascus. She is the only daughter of former President Hafez al-Assad and the sister of current President Bashar al-Assad. Bushra was married to General Assef Shawkat, who held several significant positions, including Deputy Minister of Defense, before being killed in a bombing. Due to the Syrian Civil War, she was sanctioned by the EU in March 2012 and reportedly fled Syria with her five children seeking asylum in the UAE in September 2012.
