He was initially an independent candidate in the Mawanella electorate but eventually became a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Notably, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Local Government and Cultural Affairs. His political career included multiple elections with significant victories and later affiliations with the United National Party. Beligammana held various positions in government throughout his career, including Deputy Chairman of Committees in 1977.
