C. Vann Woodward (November 13, 1908 – December 17, 1999) was an American historian and Pulitzer Prize winner known for his focus on the American South and racial relations. He supported the approach of Charles A. Beard, emphasizing the influence of unseen economic motives in politics. Initially a leftist in the 1930s, he became a leading liberal and civil rights advocate by the 1950s. His work demonstrated that segregation was a late 19th-century invention, earning acclaim as a historical 'gospel' in the civil rights movement. He shifted politically to the right by the late 1960s.
