Canaan Sodindo Banana (March 5, 1936 - November 10, 2003) was a Southern Rhodesian politician and the first president of Zimbabwe from April 18, 1980, until December 31, 1987. A Methodist minister, he was married to Janet Banana since 1961. Banana was initially involved in politics as the deputy president of the African National Council during the 1960s and faced imprisonment during the fight for independence. Controversially, he was convicted in 1998 for sexual offenses. His legacy is mixed due to his role in the liberation struggle but marred by allegations of sexual misconduct.
