Carl Gunnar David Engström (1912-1987) was a Swedish physician and innovator, renowned for inventing the first intermittent positive pressure mechanical ventilator capable of delivering controlled volume and frequency breaths, as well as inhalation anesthetics. His groundbreaking device, the Engström 150 Respirator, also known as the Engström Universal Respirator, started production in 1954. While the core principles of his ventilator design remain influential today, advancements such as the Siemens-Elema servo fan in the 1970s marked significant technological progress in the field.
