He previously commanded the United States Naval Forces Japan from 2021 to 2024, and held other significant roles including commandant of Naval District Washington. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy, he earned advanced degrees in engineering and strategic studies. Lahti was promoted to rear admiral in April 2022 and has extensive command experience in submarine warfare and environmental readiness.
