Carlo Heip (November 18, 1945 – February 15, 2013) was a Belgian marine biologist known for his role as the director-general of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. He was a professor at universities in Ghent, Belgium, and Groningen, Netherlands, where he taught biological oceanography and estuarine ecology. His research focused on meiofauna ecology and he founded the Department of Marine Biology at Ghent University. He was involved in several projects like OMEX and ECOFLAT, published numerous articles, and authored six books, making him one of the most cited scientists in his field.
