He served as a meteorologist in the army from 1943 to 1946 and later earned his Ph.D. in plant physiology in 1951. His doctoral research focused on the effect of light and organic and inorganic compounds on plant cell growth. In 1955, he isolated kinetin, a hormone that stimulates plant cell division, which became pivotal in modern plant biotechnology. He continued research on cytokinins until his death on August 18, 2012, in Bloomington.
