His research focuses on computational biology, originally starting in theoretical particle physics and transitioning to machine learning and optimization. Peterson has contributed significantly to pattern recognition with algorithms relevant to deep learning and has been involved in research on biomarkers and stem cell differentiation. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 2006.
