Caucher Birkar, born Faridoon Derakhshani in July 1978, is a Kurdish-British mathematician who lived in Iran before relocating as a political refugee to the UK. He holds a professorship at the University of Cambridge and is a leading contributor to modern birational geometry. Birkar received the Leavitt Prize in Mathematics and Statistics in 2010 for his work in algebraic geometry and was awarded the 2018 Fields Medal for proving the boundedness of Fano varieties and contributions to the minimal model program.
