He started as a soloist in the instrumental rock band The Scaffolds and later gained fame in the bands The First and Cumulus. In 1973, he performed the song 'Marleena' with Hector in the Syksyn sävel competition, where it placed sixth. Karlsson worked as a producer for the Swedish-language channel of Yleisradio until his retirement, with his final role being editor-in-chief.
