She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from June 1999 until her death on December 6, 2000. Mahlalela was elected in the 1999 general election, ranking second on the ANC's regional party list for Mpumalanga. Her political career was notably cut short when she passed away, and she was succeeded in the assembly by Lassy Chiwayo.
