Cesare Emiliani (1922–1995) was an Italian-American geologist who specialized in micropaleontology and founded paleoceanography. He developed the marine isotopic stage chronology, still used today, and established that the glaciations of the last half million years are influenced by Milanković cycles. Emiliani proposed the LOCO Project at the U.S. National Science Foundation, providing evidence of ocean history and testing seafloor spreading and plate tectonics hypotheses. Honors include the genus Emiliania named after him, and he suggested a calendar reform to address issues with BC-AD chronology.
