Originally from Gilt Edge, Tennessee, he began his coaching career as a high school coach in Memphis before establishing the track and field and cross country programs at James Madison. Additionally, McMillin contributed to the university's kinesiology department, shaping many athletes' careers. He passed away on March 8, 2020.
