His research interests include interstellar medium, infrared astronomy, light scattering theory, and astrobiology, among others. He collaborated for 40 years with Fred Hoyle, promoting the panspermia hypothesis, which they argued suggested some interstellar dust is largely organic. Wickramasinghe has proposed that certain diseases on Earth may have extraterrestrial origins, publishing over thirty books and appearing in various media.
