Charan Singh (December 23, 1902 – May 29, 1987) was an Indian politician and freedom fighter. He served as the 5th Prime Minister of India and the 5th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Following Mahatma Gandhi's path, he fought for independence from British rule and was imprisoned multiple times for his activism, including a 12-year sentence in 1930 for opposing salt laws. Singh later established the Lok Dal political party in 1980 and is often regarded as a 'Hero of Indian Farmers' for his advocacy of agrarian policies.
