He served as the Deputy Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha of India from 2004 to 2009, representing the Phillaur constituency in Punjab. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Atwal also held the position of Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly twice, from 1997 to 2002 and again from 2012 to 2017. His political career showcases significant contributions to both the state and national legislatures.
