Charles Henry Alston (November 28, 1907 – April 27, 1977) was an American artist, sculptor, muralist, and educator active in Harlem, New York. A prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance, he was the first African American to supervise the Federal Art Program of the Works Progress Administration. Alston designed murals for Harlem Hospital and the Golden State Life Insurance Company building. In 1990, he sculpted a bust of Martin Luther King Jr., which was placed in the White House, marking the first bust of an African American there.
