Charles Arthur "Charlie" Bassett was an American electrical engineer and test pilot in the U.S. Air Force, born on December 30, 1931. He was selected as an astronaut during the Astronaut Group 3 selection in 1963 and was assigned to the Gemini 9 mission. Tragically, he died on February 28, 1966, alongside fellow astronaut Elliot See in a NASA training aircraft accident at the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri, while preparing for two weeks of training in spacecraft rendezvous.
