Charles C. Ladd, an American civil engineer specializing in geotechnics, was born on November 23, 1932, in Brooklyn. He earned a B.A. from Bowdoin College and a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from MIT, where he later taught and became a full professor. His research focused on soil mechanics, soft ground construction, and offshore geotechnics, particularly clay soil behavior. He developed SHANSEP, a procedure for testing clays. He received numerous awards including the Terzaghi Award and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
