Charles Chew, Jr. was an American politician from Illinois who served in the Illinois Senate from 1967 until his death in 1986. He was born on October 9, 1922, in Greenville, Mississippi, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A Democrat, he also held a position on the Chicago City Council and worked in community relations at the Cook County Sheriff’s office. Notably, Chew led the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus alongside Carol Moseley Braun. He passed away from throat cancer in a Chicago hospital on July 3, 1986.
