With a background as a professional boxer, Johnson's criminal activity began in his teens, leading to arrests for burglary and armed robbery throughout the 1920s. He was ultimately convicted in 1934 after a robbery, sentenced to several years in prison, and transferred after attempting a jailbreak. Despite a brief release, he spent nearly two decades behind bars from 1935 until 1952.
