Charles E. Samuels Jr. is the 8th and former director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, making history as the first African-American appointed to this position. He was appointed on December 21, 2011, overseeing a vast organization with over 39,000 staff and more than 200,000 inmates. A graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a B.S. in Criminal Justice obtained in 1987, he was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in 2012. His role was pivotal in managing the agency established in 1930.
