Charles Evers is an American politician born on September 11, 1922, in Decatur, United States. He was active in the Republican Party and became prominent in the civil rights movement alongside his brother Medgar Evers. After Medgar's assassination in 1963, Charles took over as the field director of the NAACP in Mississippi, leading numerous demonstrations for African American rights. In 1969, he was elected as the first African American mayor of a biracial city in Mississippi post-Reconstruction. Evers also ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1971 and for the U.S. Senate in 1978.
