Charles Hard Townes was an American physicist and educator, awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1964. He is renowned for his work on the theory and applications of the maser, for which he holds the foundational patent. Townes conducted pioneering research in quantum electronics and its relation to laser and maser technology, and he explored nuclear spin phenomena. He shared the Nobel Prize with Nikolai Basov and Alexander Prokhorov. A member of the United Methodist Church, Townes believed that science and religion could eventually converge, despite common perceptions of their divergence.
