Charles Manson (born Maddox; November 12, 1934 - November 19, 2017) was an American criminal and musician who led the Manson Family, a cult based in California, during the late 1960s. His followers committed nine murders in July and August 1969, resulting in his conviction for conspiracy to commit murder for seven deaths, including actress Sharon Tate. Although never directly ordering the murders, Manson's ideology was seen as a contributing factor. He spent much of his life in prison and released music, with his notoriety symbolizing madness and violence in popular culture.
