Born in Ningbo, China, he was educated at Repton School and Cambridge, where he excelled in history. Smyth taught at Harvard before becoming a priest and later held various curacies in London. He was known for his liberal Catholic views and interest in the Anglican Church's history, particularly during the time of William Laud. He retired as a scholar due to health issues.
