Charles Socarides (January 24, 1922 – December 25, 2005) was an American psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and university professor. He was a co-founder and the first chair of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality in the U.S. Over his 40-year career, Socarides used psychoanalysis to treat thousands of individuals for homosexuality, with one-third of his patients later having children in stable marriages. His research suggested that male homosexuality often stemmed from a lack of paternal supervision during childhood due to overbearing maternal influence.
