He is known for carrying out a violent attack at the Strasbourg Christmas market, resulting in two deaths and 14 injuries. Chekatt had a lengthy criminal record and had previously been incarcerated for robbery and other crimes, being released from prison in late 2015. He was on a watchlist due to 'fundamentalist religious practices' and was reported to have been injured in a shootout with soldiers protecting the market.
